Snowboarding rose to prominence on the slopes in the 1970s and 1980s as an rebellious alternative to skiing. The more sophisticated, sensible skiiers didn’t accept the sub-culture of snowboarding at first and there was a clear divide between the two groups.
As snowboarding became more popular as a sport and began to build its own style, fashion and culture - slopes would aim specific runs to the snowboarders. With more snowboarders taking to the slopes, the resorts are beginning to sell themselves more to the snowboarding crowd,

In northwest Colorado lies a small mountain town with big opportunities for outdoor adventure. Steamboat Springs was originally a ranching community, and it maintains that old-west feel. Locals are friendly and the snow is light and abundant. In the 07/08 ski season, almost 500 inches of snow fell on the mountains of Steamboat.
